M.MARAMA:
In order to illustrate the theme “Youths and sports”, I have drawn a female dancer and a paddler.
Why these two sports?Paddling and dancing are the two sports the young like most and they primarily symbolize the pride of our fenua (country). The tattoos on the paddler’s arms throw into light our cultural identity and allude to our Polynesian roots. These two sports people have deliberately been set in deep sea in order to depict remoteness.
In spite of the distance, we, Polynesians, are fervent sports people. Our paddlers’ names are currently being hailed in Sacramento, and our female dancers are sources of fantasy for quite a lot of men.
Manuhiti MARARA, aged 18, is a female student and the winner of the drawing contest run by the Postal Services Department of the Post and Telecommunications Office.
